Notes: The commander of the USS Vandalia in 1839 was Uriah P. Levy. Among the detailed specifications against Hooe is his "unofficerlike and ungentlemanly conduct," or disrespect of Levy, by saying on the open deck how he’ll be damned if he’ll take any orders from "'this old Jew'" (pp. 57-58).
