Notes: Chap. 9 includes a characterization of a vacated pawnshop as "that place of Jewish extortion" (p. 9). Elam, a Jew, is the owner of the vacant shop; he rents it to Harrison Lattison as part of the latter’s attempt, facilitated by passing as a Jewish pawnbroker, to blend into the neighborhood in a plan to regain his wife.
