Notes: For Sala’s unpleasant encounter with a Jew on the streets of Stettin, see pp. 31-32. The author recounts the legend of Schinderhannes, "the renowned robber of the Rhine," and the caravan of some 150 Jews that he forced to remove their boots and shoes on a freezing January night, leading to an uproar as every Jew then claimed the very best footwear as his own (pp. 95-96).
